Del Mar, California - The Perfect Place For a Weekend Getaway
The Del Mar area of San Diego is one of the most beautiful locations on the coast. With its warm weather, sandy beaches, and shady trees, it is the perfect place for a weekend getaway. Whether you are looking for a relaxing break or want to explore the city, there are several ways to do it.
Scripps Bluff Preserve
The Scripps Bluff Preserve in Del Mar is a small nature preserve that provides 360-degree views of the San Diego coastline. It features a scenic hike and trails to a lagoon. City staff is working to figure out how to reimagine the preserve. One option is to develop an upscale blufftop resort. A proposal by the owner of Torrey Pines Nature Preserve, Steve Chinowsky, would build a 400-room, luxury resort in a four-acre plot of land north of the preserve. If the council agrees to that idea, an Environmental Impact Report will be required. Another option is to develop the preserve as a passive recreational area. That could include a network of trails tying the resort to the preserve. Alternatively, the blufftop access to the preserve could be moved to the east onto private property.

San Dieguito River Lagoon
The San Dieguito River Lagoon in Del Mar provides refuge for many endangered species. It is also a valuable habitat for a wide variety of birds. In addition, the river is a vital stop on the Pacific Flyway. A key feature of the lagoon is the presence of a natural flood control channel. This natural feature helps prevent pollutants from collecting in the lagoon. Approximately five acres of the riparian habitat along the San Dieguito River have been restored. This includes removing non-native vegetation and replacing it with native vegetation. The restoration project will include the creation of new tidal salt marsh wetlands, as well as the creation of a deep water basin. It will also create transitional coastal sage scrub and riparian habitats.
